the national weather service posts their forecasts, but they also write forecast discussions, explaining the reasoning behind the current forecast. these are usually somewhat thick on jargon, such as in this paragraph from the mt. holly office:

IN KEEPING WITH THE PAST FEW NIGHTS THE LOCATION OF THE SURFACE LOW OFF THE COAST IS AS FOLLOWS...NAM TUE 12Z...256 MILES SE AND AT 18Z...218 MILES EAST. THE GFS TUE DOUBLE SFC LOW...185 MILES SE AND AT 18Z DOUBLE LOWS 112 MILES SE AND 380 MILES EAST AND AT 00Z WED 106 MILES SE WITH OTHER LOW WELL NE. EURO TUE 12Z 318 MILES SE AND 18Z 340 MILES E. HAVE LOOKED AT THE GRAPHICAL MODELS AND DISC FROM HPC AND WILL BE GENERALLY FOLLOWING THE TREND ALTHOUGH FEEL THAT KEEPING THE DOOR OPEN FOR UNEXPECTED DEVELOPMENT IS PRUDENT AT THIS TIME.

occasionally, they include gems though. this upcoming week contains a difficult-to-pin-down storm, and both pro and amateur meteorologists are pulling out their hair. and that seems to have resulted in this, two paragraphs later, in the same discussion:

MONDAY WILL BE AN IMPORTANT DAY IN THE FIELD OF METEOROLOGY. A WEATHER CONTROL DAY WHEN ANIMALS TAKE CENTER STAGE. THE GROUND HOG AND COW ARE PROBABLY THE BEST PROGNOSTICATORS AND SOMETIMES THE THICKNESS OF THE SQUIRRELS TAIL. SOUNDS NICE AND FUZZY BUT US HUMANS CAN PREDICT CHANGES IN THE WEATHER TOO. UNFORTUNATELY, WE DO IT BY MEASURING THE PAIN IN OUR JOINTS, AND LOOKING AT THE MAPS AND POTENTIAL SCENARIOS, EVERY JOINT IS ACHING AT THIS TIME.

so the title is hysterical, but the content is just terrible. it hurts me.

we're going to ban proper punctuation because it'll be easier since it gets misused?

quote from a councilor: "If I want to go to a restaurant, I don't want to have an A-level (high school diploma) in English to find it."

farewell, english language. *sob*

taking a break from season 4 of lost.

i don't know what my damage is this weekend. maybe it's that i kept getting pulled in by weather models and suchlike. i did accomplish two big house things: laundry and groceries. i had some naps. i need to remember to take out the garbage.

this morning my lips were numb, as if i'd been to the dentist. it went away. however, it's kind of feeling that way again. my lips have been pretty dry lately and i've had a hard time leaving them alone; maybe that's why.

in the past half hour i've developed a headache that started at the base of my skull and now it's worked its way round to my eyes. this angers me, but i feel too lousy to put a slogan on a sandwich board and go out to my local street corner and protest. and i'm not sure it would do any good.

i need to get a chain for the door.

it's generally quiet. it's almost as if everyone is doing something else.
