first birds
Jan. 2nd, 2010 12:29 amso i went to the meadowlands today in lieu of the zoo. did pretty well, and it wasn't too cold so i stayed a while. i heard a kingfisher as soon as i got onto the private road, which was a surprise. there must be a stream that i can't see. i also had a gorgeous red-tailed hawk very soon after, and i got a good look at it. later, i had a fantastic encounter with a female kingfisher who seemed to stick around since i was behind a fence.
others: northern cardinal, northern mockingbird, american goldfinch, downy woodpecker, european starling, house sparrow, white-throated sparrow, northern shrike, northern shoveler, mallard, canada goose, mute swan, bufflehead, canvasbacks (50+), ruddy duck (1), merganser (probably common, not hooded)(1), northern harrier, possible red-winged blackbirds, possible american black ducks, possible gadwall. great black-backed gull. plenty of gulls i didn't identify. rock doves. mourning dove. crows. blue jays. an ex-goose. and someone's feathers. possible squabble, possible meal. hard to say. heard the rooster, too.
i also saw two dogs that i've seen being walked there several times before. i think they are italian greyhounds. today they were extra friendly and came up to me several times. one is named harold, or carole, or something like that... i know this because the owners kept calling him to come back. and the other one was wearing a coat... and boots. on all four paws. too damned cute.
in any case, i spent a fair amount of time today giving directions and tips to many old men. about birds, damn you.
