about a month ago, amazon.com misled me into thinking the swell season (documentary) dvd was released. off i went to barnes and noble to try and buy it, but of course it was wrong. i left slightly dejected.

but the dvd came out tuesday, and today i had the opportunity to hit b&n again after work with a friend. i was hopeful, but also concerned they may not have any copies. right as i walked into the music and dvd section, i saw it there at the top of the new releases display. several copies, even.

now, a few confessions.

- i whispered a victory "yes!"
- i may have done a quiet double fist-pump.
- and i might have bounced.
- and i probably really did hold the dvd to my chest with a clutching sort of gesture.

i was also surprised to see the cast album for once: the musical for sale. so i grabbed that as well. i've been hedging on whether or not to pay ny theatre prices to go see it. but i can swing the price of a cd to listen to it with little regret.

as i walked by the counter, i checked the release board behind it to see what else may have come out recently.

the guy behind the counter said to me, "you just made my day."

"excuse me?"

"you made my day. when we got these in, i didn't think we'd sell more than one copy, and that was mine. but you were so happy to get it."

i laughed. turned out he hadn't seen the film yet, and was having a viewing party with five friends tonight. so we geeked out over the swell season, the frames, and glen hansard for several minutes. he got to the show at the met last year, which i didn't. but he apparently didn't make the burgundy stain sessions, and i have. i saw the documentary, he saw the musical. it was all pretty amusing.

eventually, i made him ring up my purchases so i could leave and go stand in a field for three hours waiting for the sun to go down so i could listen for a bird with 20 people.

the timberdoodle came through, so pretty good all around.

so i went to look/listen for american woodcock (also called the timberdoodle) tonight with about 20 people. we were hoping to hear them peent (the sound they make before taking to the air for a courtship display) and to hear the wing sounds they make while flying. the video below has all of these things (except showing you the flight), but it seems to be specially lit so they could get the footage. in reality, you're doing this from duck dusk* til dark.

we had a least 3 woodcock. yay!

* i couldn't not leave that typo.
