birds and insects
Sep. 6th, 2009 11:11 pmso i got up this morning, ate some food, and headed off to look at birds. when i got to the park, i saw a few things, and when the nature center opened, i went over there to acquire a beverage and see if i could check out the gift shop. there was a bird walk/field trip going on today, and i hadn't signed up. the leader was standing outside the nature center, and saw me trying to track down the robin that had just flown into the plate glass window in front of the building. (robin was apparently ok.) he invited me to join the group. i made polite sounds. when i got into the gift shop, another person invited me to join, so i took it as a sign and agreed.
it was interesting. there were sort of two leaders: the leader, and the guy who usually leads these things. there were maybe 18 of us. neither leader said much, and eventually the group split into two smaller groups, because the leaders didn't really talk to each other, either. i stuck with the guy who is usually leader, because i read two blogs that he keeps.
i didn't really see birds that i don't usually see, except i have to take their word on the yellowlegs. however, we did spend a good amount of time looking at butterflies and moths, (including viceroys, red admirals, and clearwing moths), and the cheat sheet guide i just happened to have bought yesterday came in handy for the leader. this amused me.
the "flock" dissipated after two hours, so i went off on my own. i hit up the gift shop for real this time, and scored a bird call thingie. this proved useful in finding a marsh wren. i hung out at the park for about three and a half more hours, pausing frequently to sit, and to read bits of the novel i'm currently reading. i finally left the park around 3:30ish (i'd arrived around 9am... so i was there for quite a while.) it was just starting to get cloudy.
by the time i walked to the grocery store, picked up some groceries, and got home, it was 5pm.
i came home, ate some food, watched some house, and have lazed around since. i'm considering going back again tomorrow, because... well, because i can if i want to.
it wasn't the most informative bird walk in the world, but i still had an interesting day.
now, my bed calls to me.
